Magicard D FAQ
How do I download and install the Magicard D driver?
Use the Printer driver button above for Windows or Mac. Run the installer, then connect the printer by USB and turn it on. When the printer shows up in Printers & scanners, print a test card to confirm everything works.
On a Mac, if the installer will not open, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Company computers may need IT to allow it.
How do I update the Magicard D firmware?
Most printers rarely need it. Update only if our support team asks you to, or to fix a known issue. Use the Firmware update button above. On Magicard's download page, pick your model and enter the serial number from the label on the printer, and it gives you the right file. Keep the printer turned on and connected while it updates.
Do not turn off or unplug the printer while it updates. If you would rather not do it alone, call us and a technician will run it with you over remote support.
Which versions of Windows does the Magicard D work with?
All of them, including Windows 11. The Magicard D driver and Bodno ID Card Software both work on any version of Windows. Get them from the downloads above.
Does the Magicard D work on a Mac?
Yes. Download the Mac driver above. Bodno ID Card Software runs on Mac too.
How do I print a test card?
The Magicard D prints its own test card, no computer needed: on the printer, Menu › Print Test › Yes.
If the test card prints cleanly but your cards do not, the problem is in the software or the card design, not the printer.
Which ribbons and cards does the Magicard D use?
Ribbons made for the Magicard D:
- Magicard BN300 Color Ribbon for Magicard D - YMCKO - 300 prints $109.95

Which cleaning kit does the Magicard D use, and how often should I clean it?
- Bodno Cleaning Rollers for Magicard Rio Pro 360, Enduro 3e, Pronto100, 300, 400X, 600 & D – 5 Pack (Magicard 3633-0054 Compatible) $23.13
- Bodno Cleaning Kit for Magicard Printers – 10 Cleaning Cards & Pen (Magicard 3633-0053 Compatible) $35.25
Magicard recommends cleaning every 700 cards or at every ribbon change, whichever comes first, and right away if you see specks, dots or lines on your cards.
Which replacement parts can I order for the Magicard D?
- Magicard Replacement Printhead for 300, 400X, 600, and D Series ID Card Printers $780.00

Not sure which part you need? Send us a photo and the serial number from the label on the printer.
What does the error code on the Magicard D screen mean?
Errors show as two numbers, like 4:7. The first number tells you what went wrong. The second is detail for a technician.
- 1 Lid open: close the lid and print again.
- 2 Out of cards: load cards, and check Hand Feed Mode is off (Menu › Hand Feed Mode).
- 3 No hand-fed card: put a card in the front slot, or turn Hand Feed Mode off.
- 4 Card jam: open the lid, turn the printer off and ease the card out. Then run a cleaning card.
- 5 Out of ribbon: the ribbon ran out or tore. Fit a new one, or repair the tear (see below).
- 6 Ribbon not accepted: wrong ribbon type or region for this printer. Use the ribbons listed for the Magicard D.
- 7 Remove ribbon: take the ribbon out and run the calibration again.
- 8 Printhead can't lift: almost always the wrong power adapter. See the power question below.
- 9 Flipper jam (two-sided printers): clean the printer. If it continues, try a fresh pack of cards.
- 10 Print job not readable: print again. If it repeats, update the driver.
- 11 Firmware out of date: update the firmware from the Downloads section.
- 12 Card sensor: usually a card fed by hand while Hand Feed Mode is off, or dust on a sensor. Run a cleaning card.
- 13 Internal error: turn the printer off and on, then update the firmware. If it comes back, contact us.
- 22 two-sided printing not enabled, 23 no magnetic encoder, 24 colour job with a black-only ribbon: change the print job or the ribbon to match the printer.
- 26 Motor fault: check the power adapter first, then contact us.
- 27 Cleaning due: run a cleaning card.
- 30 Magnetic stripe didn’t verify: check the stripe is loaded face down on the left, and try another card.
- 14, 20, 28, 29 Printhead or internal memory not detected: contact us.
How do I set up the Magicard D on our network (Ethernet)?
Set the network address from a Windows computer first, over USB. This step is needed even if only Macs will print to it.
- Install the driver and connect by USB. In Devices and Printers, right-click the printer › Printing Preferences › Printer Status. It should say Connected.
- Right-click the printer › Printer Properties › Network tab › Ethernet.
- Tick Use Static Network settings and enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway from your IT team. Click OK.
- Unplug USB, plug in the network cable, and restart the printer by unplugging the power and plugging it back in.
- Check it on the printer: Menu › More › Network Info › IP Address.
On each other Windows computer, run the driver installer, choose the Ethernet option and type the printer’s IP address. A technician can do this with you over remote support.
How do I print to the Magicard D from a Mac over the network?
First give the printer its network address (the question above). Then on the Mac:
- Install the Magicard Mac driver from the Downloads section. There are Intel and Apple silicon versions. Apple menu › About This Mac shows which one you need.
- Open Terminal, paste cupsctl WebInterface=yes and press Return.
- In Safari or Chrome go to localhost:631 › Administration › Add Printer, add the printer by its IP address and choose the Magicard driver.
Magicard’s Mac driver video shows the network steps from 10:04. Apple removed this printer page in macOS 27, so on macOS 27 call us and a technician will add the printer with you.
Can I check the Magicard D from a web browser?
Yes. When the printer is on your network, type http:// and its IP address into a browser on the same network, for example http://192.168.1.2. That opens the printer’s built-in page, called Clix. Nothing to install, and it works on a phone too.
From there you can see how much ribbon is left, start a cleaning cycle, turn Hand Feed Mode on or off, print a test card, choose the HoloKote watermark and set the standby time. If the page does not open, the computer and printer are not on the same network.
It says out of cards, but the hopper is full.
- Hand Feed Mode may be on. Menu › Hand Feed Mode › Off. While it is on, the printer only takes cards from the front slot.
- The rollers need cleaning. Cards slip on dirty rollers instead of feeding. Run a cleaning card.
- The cards are too thick or stuck together. The printer takes 20 to 50 mil cards (0.50 to 1.27 mm). Fan the stack before loading, and hold cards by the edges.
Cards print faint, or the printer shows a printhead or motor error.
Check the power adapter first. It is the most common cause, often after a desk move, when a laptop charger with the same plug gets connected by mistake. The Magicard D uses a Sunpower 90W adapter, 24V 3.75A, with a yellow 90W tag. Any other adapter can cause faint printing, printhead-lift and motor errors, and can damage the printer.
If the adapter is right, open a fresh pack of cards and print the internal test card. If the test card is faint too, contact us. If only your own designs print faint, raise the YMC slider under Printing Preferences › Image › Printhead Power (the default is 50) a few steps at a time.
The ribbon broke or keeps sticking to the card.
To repair it, tape the two broken ends together, wind the black take-up spool about two full turns by hand, then turn the printer off and on.
Then fix the cause, or it will break again:
- A dirty main print roller. The card slips, the ribbon overheats and tears. Clean the printer with a cleaning card. If the roller still looks stained, press a strip of clear tape along it and peel it off, with the printer turned off.
- A card that already went through the printer. It has the clear overlay on it even if it looks blank. Use a fresh card.
- Printhead Power set too high under Printing Preferences › Image. Set the sliders back to 50.
There is a white line along every card.
Print the internal test card (Menu › Print Test). If the line is on the test card too, a spot on the printhead is damaged and the printhead needs replacing. Contact us.
If the line is not on the test card, run a cleaning card and wipe the printhead with the cleaning pen.
What damages printheads: grit from cards left out of the box, ribbons left open on a desk, a blue cleaning roller that was not replaced, holes punched before printing instead of after, and rings or bracelets touching the printhead while changing the ribbon.
What is the blue roller, and when do I change it?
The blue sticky roller holds the dust the printer cleans off each card. A new one comes in the box with every genuine ribbon, so change it at each ribbon change:
- Open the lid and unclip the old blue roller.
- Slide out the metal bar inside it. Keep the bar.
- Slide the bar into the new roller and clip it in.
- Pull the tab to peel off the paper wrapper, then close the lid.
The orange roller underneath stays in the printer. Wipe it with a damp cloth when you clean the printer.
How do I print on both sides of the card?
The printer has to be a two-sided model: the screen shows DUO after it starts up. In Printing Preferences, set it to print both sides, then choose colour or black for the front and the back.
If the screen shows DUO but the option is greyed out, the driver lost contact with the printer. Turn the printer off, delete every Magicard printer in Devices and Printers, restart the computer, turn the printer back on and wait a few minutes for it to reappear.
No DUO on the screen? Ask us about upgrading your Magicard D to two-sided.
Can the Magicard D encode magnetic stripe cards?
Only if it was built with the encoder: the screen shows the printer name with M or MAG. An encoder can’t be added later.
Load cards with the stripe facing down, on the left side as you look at the printer from the front. Set up encoding in your card software or under Printing Preferences › Encoding. Under Card Front › Overcoat Options, choose the magnetic stripe hole so the clear overlay is not printed over the stripe.
Barcodes print in colour or will not scan.
Some card programs send barcodes as a picture, so they print with the colour panels instead of solid black. Close your card software, then in Printing Preferences:
- Image tab › Advanced › set Colour Correction to Gamma 1.
- Card Front tab › Black Options › untick Pictures use YMC only.
Click OK and print again. To force solid black in one area, such as where the barcode sits, add it under Card Front › Black Options › Black Resin Areas.
My driver settings keep changing back.
Close your card software. In Devices and Printers, right-click the printer › Printer Properties › Advanced tab › Printing Defaults, and make your changes there. Then open Printing Preferences and check the same settings are set there too.
The driver install fails with error 2502.
The Windows account doesn’t have permission to install software. Sign in with a local administrator account just to install the driver (your IT team can help), then switch back. The printer works normally from a regular account afterward.
Does the Magicard D come with a CD?
No. There is no CD. Download the driver and Bodno ID Card Software from the Downloads section above, or from bodno.com/pages/setup.
The driver won’t install, and Windows is in S mode.
Windows in S mode can’t install printer drivers. Switch out of S mode: open Settings › Activation and choose Switch out of S mode. It’s free, but you can’t switch back. On a school or work computer, ask your IT team.
Can I connect the Magicard D through a USB hub or dock?
No. Use the USB cable that came with the printer, plugged straight into the computer. Skip hubs, docks and adapters, and on a desktop use a port on the back.
Does the Magicard D work with a Chromebook?
No. Chromebooks only print to printers that work without a driver, and Magicard printers need one. Use a Windows or Mac computer.
I have a new computer. What do I install?
Three things, in this order: the printer driver, Bodno ID Card Software, then a test card. Activate the software with the code from your purchase email. If activation does not go through, see Activation & license help or call us.
What should I send support so they can help fast?
- Your printer model and the serial number from the label on the printer
- A photo of the card or the error message
- Windows or Mac, and which version
- USB or Ethernet
- Your order number, so we can check your coverage, including TotalCare
