When the computer can't find your ID card printer, the printer is almost never broken. In our support calls it comes down to the same few things: a loose or hub-connected cable, the driver for the wrong model, a work computer that blocked the install, or an old copy of the printer that got in the way. Work through these in order. Most people are printing again by step 4.

Time 10–15 minDifficulty EasyYou need The USB cable that came with the printer, and admin access to the computer
Quick answer

1 Turn the printer on and wait for the ready light. 2 Plug the USB cable straight into the computer, not a hub or dock. 3 Check that Windows or Mac sees the printer. 4 Install the driver for your exact model. 5 On a work computer, get admin rights or IT. 6 Remove old copies of the printer and reinstall. 7 On a network printer, check the network. 8 Pick the card printer when you print.

Fix it in this order

1
Check the printer is on and ready

Turn the printer on and wait until it finishes starting up and shows it is ready. If it shows an error or a blinking light, clear that first: the computer often can't talk to a printer that is stuck on an error. Make sure the ribbon and cards are loaded and every cover is closed.

Then turn it off, wait 10 seconds and turn it back on. This alone fixes a surprising number of "printer not found" messages.

2
Check the cable
  • Use the USB cable that came in the box. Some cables only charge and don't carry data.
  • Plug it straight into the computer. USB hubs, docking stations, and the ports on monitors and keyboards are the most common reason a card printer goes missing.
  • Try a different USB port, then unplug and replug both ends firmly.
  • On a network printer, check that the Ethernet cable is in and the network light on the printer's port is lit.
3
See if the computer finds the printer

Look for your card printer in the computer's printer list:

Windows 11: Settings→Bluetooth & devices→Printers & scanners
Windows 10: Settings→Devices→Printers & scanners
Mac: System Settings→Printers & Scanners

On Windows you can also right-click the Start button and open Device Manager. If the printer shows up under Other devices or with a yellow warning sign, the computer sees it but the driver is missing or wrong. Go to step 4.

If it doesn't show up anywhere, even in Device Manager, go back to step 2 and try another cable or port.

4
Install the driver for your exact model

Each printer needs its own driver, and the driver for a similar model won't find yours. A Seaory S25 driver won't work on an S26, for example. Use the guide for your printer and follow its steps in order. Many card printer installers ask you to keep the USB cable unplugged until they tell you to connect it.

5
On a work or school computer, check admin rights

Many company and school computers block driver installs without saying so: the installer seems to finish, but the printer never appears. If you don't have admin rights, ask your IT team to run the driver install or to give you rights for a few minutes.

Our computer requirements and IT checklist has everything to send them.

6
Remove old copies and reinstall

If you see the same printer listed twice, or one named "Copy 1", the computer may be sending to the wrong one. Remove every copy of the card printer and its old driver, restart the computer, then install the driver again from step 4.

Step by step: How to remove printer drivers on Windows.

7
Network printers: check the network

The printer and the computer must be on the same network. Guest Wi-Fi, a VPN, or a separate office network will hide the printer. If the printer's address changed after a router restart, the computer keeps looking at the old one. Re-add the printer by its current address, or set a fixed address for it.

8
Pick the card printer when you print

If the computer lists the printer but your cards still go nowhere, check which printer is chosen when you print. It is easy to send a card to the office paper printer by mistake. In Bodno ID Card Software, choose your card printer in the print window. On a Mac, see Bodno ID Card Software on a Mac.

Stopped working after a Windows update?

A Windows update can replace or disable a printer driver. Remove the printer and driver (step 6), restart, and install the latest driver for your model again (step 4). If it still won't show up, contact us before you try anything else.
