Before You Set Up Your ID Card Printer: Computer Requirements, Admin Rights & IT Checklist

Bodno software·Updated Oct 20, 2026·3 min read

Most printer setups that stall are not printer problems. The computer cannot install the driver: the account has no administrator rights, the computer is one the driver cannot run on, or a work network blocks the license check. Check these before your printer arrives and setup takes minutes, not a second call.

Quick answer

You need a Windows PC with an Intel or AMD processor, or a Mac, signed in with an administrator account, connected to the internet. On a work or school computer, send the IT checklist below to your IT team before you start.

Will my computer work?

Computer Works?
Windows 10 or 11, Intel or AMD processor Yes.
Mac Yes, with a Mac-compatible printer. Some printer drivers come in separate versions for Intel Macs and Apple-chip Macs. See Bodno on a Mac.
Windows in S mode Not until you switch out of S mode. Windows in S mode cannot install printer drivers. Open Settings › Activation and choose Switch out of S mode. It is free, but you cannot switch back. On a school or work computer, ask your IT team.
Windows with a Snapdragon or other ARM processor No. In our support cases, card printer drivers do not install on these. To check, open Settings › System › About: if System type says "ARM-based processor", use a different computer.
Chromebook No. Chromebooks only print to printers that work without a driver, and card printers need one.
iPad, tablet or phone No. The printer driver and Bodno ID Card Software install on Windows or Mac.

Administrator rights: the #1 setup blocker

Installing the printer driver and Bodno ID Card Software needs an administrator account. Without one, Windows asks for a password you do not have, or the driver install fails with error 2502.

The fix: sign in with an administrator account just to install (your IT team can do this part), then switch back. The printer works normally from a regular account afterward.

Check your account:

  • Windows: open Settings › Accounts › Your info. It says Administrator under your name if you have the rights.
  • Mac: open System Settings › Users & Groups. Your account says Admin.

Send this to your IT team

Copy this list into an email to IT. Everything on it is needed on the computer that will print the cards.

1
Install as administrator

Install the printer driver from the printer's support page, then Bodno ID Card Software. Both need administrator rights.

2
Allow the license check

Bodno checks its license online at least once a week. Firewalls and web filters can block it, and then cards print with a watermark. Allow the addresses in the firewall settings.

3
Plug the printer straight in

Use the USB cable that came with the printer, plugged directly into the computer. Skip hubs, docks and adapters.

4
Be reachable for the setup session

Our technicians help you set up over a remote session. If your company blocks remote-support tools, book the session for a time IT can join.

Before your printer arrives

  • Keep your order number. You need it to register the printer. Bought on Amazon? It looks like 114-1234567-1234567 and is in Your Orders on Amazon or on the packing slip. If someone else placed the order, ask them for it now. More: finding your order number.
  • Pick the computer and check it against the table above.
  • Book a free 1-hour setup session with a technician: pick a time. On a work computer, invite your IT person.
  • When the printer arrives, start at Register your printer.
Work or school computer?

Most setups that stop halfway are waiting on an administrator password. Sending IT the checklist a day early is the fastest way to get printing.
