Barcode, Access Card, or Encoded Chip?
They all end with a card someone scans or taps — but they’re three different jobs, with different software, printers and cards. Find yours before you order.
Print a barcode or QR code
Ink on the surface of the card. A scanner reads the printed lines — time clocks, lunch lines, library checkout, gym check-in.
- Edition
- Bronze (standard barcode) · Silver (QR) · Gold (other 2D)
- Encoder
- Not needed
- Cards
- Standard blank PVC
- Computer
- Windows or Mac
Print on an access card you already have
Your security company already programmed the card, and it already opens your doors. You’re only printing the photo and name on the outside. That’s not encoding.
- Edition
- Any — Bronze is enough
- Encoder
- Not needed
- Cards
- Printable access cards (e.g. Bodno proximity cards)
- Computer
- Windows or Mac
Encode a credential
The printer writes data into a chip inside the card while it prints. The card becomes the key — for an NFC tap, a door system, or a smartcard reader.
- Edition
- Platinum (NFC, RFID, smartcards) · Diamond (MIFARE Classic & Ultralight)
- Encoder
- Yes — built into the printer
- Cards
- Encodable cards, e.g. NTAG NFC
- Computer
- Windows only
Quick test: if a card your security company gave you already opens your door, you’re Job 2 — you don’t need encoding, an encoder, or Platinum. Order printable cards and any Bodno edition prints on them.
Compare the Editions Side by Side
* Platinum and Diamond run on Mac, but their encoding, auto-print and web print server features are Windows-only. Every printer ships with Bronze. Already have a code? Upgrade it — you keep the same activation code.
